A bridge between
two worlds
How a friendship across continents became a collection of handcrafted brass for Dutch homes.
It started with a bowl
In 2019, during a visit to Moradabad—India's brass city—I found myself in a small workshop tucked behind the main market. The artisan, Rajesh, was shaping a bowl with nothing but a hammer and years of inherited skill. No machines. No shortcuts. Just hands, metal, and generations of knowledge.
I bought that bowl. It now sits on my dining table in Amsterdam, catching the grey Dutch light and warming the room in ways I didn't expect. Friends noticed. They asked where it came from. They wanted one too.
The problem with "ethnic decor"
When I looked for brass decor in Dutch shops, I found two extremes: heavily ornamented pieces that felt out of place in modern homes, or mass-produced items stripped of all character. Nothing bridged the gap between authentic Indian craft and Dutch design sensibility.
So I went back to Rajesh. And his friend Amita. And her cousin's workshop. I asked: could we make pieces that honour your traditions but speak to a different aesthetic? Simpler silhouettes. Cleaner lines. The warmth of brass without the visual noise.
Building something real
Aman Brass isn't a brand trying to "discover" Indian craft for Western consumers. It's a collaboration. The artisans I work with aren't anonymous suppliers—they're partners with names, families, and creative input. When Amita suggested adding a subtle lotus texture to our bowl, we listened. When Rajesh refined the vase proportions, we adapted.
We pay fairly. Not "fair trade certified" with paperwork and audits—just direct relationships and transparent pricing. The artisans know exactly where their work goes and what it sells for.
Small by design
Our collection is intentionally limited. Nine pieces. That's it. Each one chosen because it works—in a Dutch apartment, a Belgian townhouse, a German loft. We're not trying to fill warehouses or chase trends. We're curating objects that earn their place in your home.
Growth isn't the goal. Quality is. Relationships are. Making something beautiful that supports real people on both ends—that's what matters.
